When a new product or service is introduced, our natural reaction is to question it. Our brains form opinions before even really knowing the full breadth of what the service, product or trend is about. And coworking spaces are no different. So while we know our approach to business and community building may not be an ideal fit for every business – what we DO believe is that the numerous benefits of our community, outweigh the stereotypes.
Myth 1: “Only bustling metro areas can sustain coworking spaces.”
Absolute rubbish! When we look at what makes a coworking space successful, it has absolutely no connection to the population size. What it is defined by is based on delivering what the community needs. Take the coworking space in Coggon, Iowa for example! The town itself has a population of less than 700 people, and they have a thriving economic hub set up in a vacant school building. Their integrated coworking space allows area entrepreneurs the opportunity to leverage technology, mentors, free and low-cost business classes as well as public databases to deliver what the community needs.
When the coworking space fills in the gaps of entrepreneurial services, championing your community, it will take root and thrive!
Myth 2: “Coworking is only for startups and freelancers.”
Complete hogwash! There are a multitude of ways The Hub is used by small businesses and larger corporations alike! Many of the larger corporations we work with (Chic-Fil-A, for instance) are members to allow their employees the ability to meet off-site, network and grow within the community.
Companies and corporations also use coworking spaces as a creative added benefit by allowing their telecommuting employees the opportunity to work from home, the office or a cowork location.
Myth 3: “I’ll be too distracted to get any work done.”
Yes, coworking spaces are rarely ever completely quiet – but that doesn’t mean people are being unproductive. In fact, national statistics say that on average, people in coworking spaces are more productive, report an increase in income and have a larger business network.
So whats the secret? For most, the low buzz of a vibrant, lively coworking space is just the type of stimulus they are looking for! The cross-pollination of problem solving that happens from being tuned into a community of people, and the productivity that comes from being around professionals who are hyper-focused on pursuing goals, is undeniably beneficial for individuals, brands, communities, and local economies.
Think of coworking spaces as new-age water coolers, allowing people to tune in on conversations that relate to their business and community, or tune-out when you’re too busy #slaying the workload to really get involved in the social side of the day.
Myth 4: “Coworking is expensive.”
While being a member of a coworking space WILL cost you more than the cost to work from your kitchen table, it’s an affordable luxury with drastically lower overhead compared to renting your own office. While you reap the benefits of the space and amenities, you’re able to neglect the usual things like monthly utility bills, infrastructure and maintenance. You’re also in a position of complete flexibility – because you can pivot as your business growth demands without having to juggle long-term leases and other standard rental agreement restrictions.
Myth 5: “It is the same as working from home.”
False! Refer to myths 1 through 4.
